KOGIN-SASHI
MIZEN BLUE ~SHO~

KOGIN-SASHI

Located in the northernmost part of Honshu, Tsugaru's cold climate made cotton cultivation impossible,
making imported cotton products a luxury. During the Edo period,
local farmers were not allowed to wear costly cotton clothing,
so instead they layered indigo-dyed hemp kimonos to combat the cold.
To make these hemp fabrics suitable for the harsh winters,
they began stitching them with cotton thread for warmth and reinforcement,
eventually leading to the creation of "Tsugaru Kogin-zashi".
This art form was born from the wisdom of women living in the harsh northern climate.
