The “Tamamayu” Cocoon — A Symbol of Life and Craftsmanship

Ushikubi Tsumugi is woven from the silk of tamamayu,
a rare cocoon formed when two silkworms spin together as one.
Accounting for only two to three percent of all cocoons,
these threads are intricately intertwined—once regarded as imperfect, even as waste.

Yet in Shiramine, a small mountain village at the foot of sacred Mount Hakusan,
people began to spin these threads with great care,
weaving for the warmth of their families.
From this devotion, Ushikubi Tsumugi was born.

The silk spun from tamamayu carries a distinctive uneven texture,
revealing delicate knots along the weft.
This gives the fabric remarkable strength and a beauty that deepens with time.

Mount Hakusan, long revered as a source of life-giving water,
has watched over this craft for centuries.
Woven with inherited skill and quiet resolve,
Ushikubi Tsumugi embodies a spirit and allure unlike any other.
