Unlike many fashion brands that maintain uniformity wherever they go in the world,
fashion that allows you to feel the story of its origin is a unique experience of the collaboration
between MIZEN and Ushikubi Tsumugi, which pursues design where the artisan and their techniques take center stage.

Ushikubi Tsumugi: A Traditional Craft of Ishikawa Prefecture
The “Tamamayu” Cocoon: A Symbol of Cooperation
Ushikubi Tsumugi is woven from the silk of “tamamayu” cocoons, a unique phenomenon where two silkworms cooperate to spin a single cocoon. Always containing a male and female pair, as if in love, these rare cocoons account for only 2-3% of all cocoons produced. Two threads can be spun from a tamamayu cocoon, but they are intertwined, making it difficult to create a clean thread. In the past, these cocoons were considered waste. However, with a spirit of resourcefulness, people began carefully spinning these tangled threads to weave for their families, marking the beginning of Ushikubi Tsumugi. Born from the Snowy Mountains of Hakusan
The birthplace of Ushikubi Tsumugi is Shiramine, Hakusan City, Ishikawa Prefecture, located at the foot of Mount Hakusan. Shiramine is a region with heavy snowfall, reaching 3-4 meters in winter. During the long winters when the village was cut off by snow, women spun thread and wove to support their families. They primarily used the “tamamayu” cocoons to create Ushikubi Tsumugi. The thread spun from tamamayu has a distinctive knot pattern in the weft (horizontal) direction due to the intertwined threads. This unique texture makes the fabric exceptionally durable, earning it the name “kugunuki tsumugi” (nail-pulling tsumugi). Mount Hakusan, revered as a sacred mountain and source of life-giving water, provides the backdrop for this enduring tradition. Ushikubi Tsumugi, woven with inherited techniques and imbued with the spirit of the mountain, exudes a unique charm unlike any other tsumugi.
